Fresher’s Page

by Alexander

Hello and welcome to the official JCR website! Grizedale College Sign

As you are here you must be going to attend (or are thinking about it) Grizedale College, This page is to give you a little background information on the college and what its about.

Grizedale College, named after Grizedale Forest in the Lake District, opened in 1975. The name is of Norse origin and means “Valley of the Wild Boar”. (Hence our logo). It is at the heart of campus, and close to shops, catering outlets, the Management School and the George Fox Building. However, the college has been completely revamped recently, only reaching completion late in 2009.

This map of the campus shows the location of Grizedale with a red ring around it (click to enlarge):

Grizedale’s administration block is to the north of the college, it is also the location of the bar, common room, porter’s lodge, laundrette and the JCR office. The administration block can be seen from the road and is clearly visible as the windows of the bar look straight out over Grizedale. This is the first place you will go when you arrive at Grizedale as this is where you will pick up the keys to your room!  Bar

Grizedale has some of the most mordern accomadation on campus and is a beautiful place to live. However its not all seriousness and administration blocks, we (the Grizedale JCR) run many socials throughout the year. The biggest being the Extrav’ that every college has at the end of the year. Our’s was a great success and plan to make the Fresher’s Week (AKA Intro Week) just as big a success.

Fresher’s Week is from the 2nd to the 5th of October and will most certainly be the best week you will ever have! With an event every night you will not got bored, it is a fantastic chance to meet new people and make life long friends. All of the events will have different options so do not be worried about having to drink every night as there will be plenty to do aswell!

The JCR (Junior Common Room) are a group of volunteer students that are currently at Grizedale that organise and help that whole college, so do not be worried about approaching any of us about any problems you may have because even if we do not have a solution we can point you in the right direction! During your time at Grizedale you will be able to run for a position in the JCR and vote on all the candidates, so the students choose who they are. For a full list of the members of the JCR please visit the JCR page.

Here are a few introductions from the current JCR:

Why hello there! Let me introduce myself, I am Alex Skitt, Grizedale Male Equality, Welfare and Diversity Officer, or if you prefer you may call me Bear, a nickname brought on because of an uncanny
similarity of voice to the survival expert/ ultimate hardman ‘Bear Grylls’, my favourite night out would be a classic Saturday night at sugar and an interesting fact about me is that I once made the front cover of an Indian National Newspaper, still to this day I have no idea why! It is my job on the JCR to make sure that your time in Grizedale College is the best of your life. If you have any personal worries, issues or concerns in relation to yourwelfare, feel that you are being discriminated against, have an idea for a campaign to spread awareness on a particular issue or would just like some free condoms then please contact me for a friendly, confidential chat either by email: ku.ca.retsacnalnull@ttiks.a or visit me @ the JCR office (upstairs in Gz Bar next to the common room) between 4-5 on a Wednesday afternoon. Look forward to seeing you :-)

Hi, I’m Emily and I am Grizedale Treasurer which means I deal with all the money issues for the JCR, things from buying sports equipment to ordering coaches for nights out and everything in between. I do not have specific contact hours but you can usually get in touch with me via Facebook if need be.
My nickname is ‘Wigan’ purely because that is where I’m from and I am unfortunate enough have the accent too (original, I know). One of my housemates came up with it during freshers week and it stuck!
I enjoy being part of gZ because it’s one of the smallest colleges which is very handy as you get to know the majority of people pretty quickly. We also have the best accommodation and we’re close to everywhere on campus.
My favourite nights out in Lancaster have to be Elements on a Monday (although it is quite expensive to get in so watch out for any deals!) and Hustle/Revs on a Thursday. You also cannot beat Friday and Saturday at Sugar, but watch out for the smell!!
My funny story will probably be from Pub Golf during Freshers Week, when I thought I could keep up with the guys and do all my drinks in one. Turns out I can’t and I threw up in Bowland in front of everyone, even managing to get some on my hat :( definitely won’t be in the same state this time round!
Hope you enjoy being a fellow Grizedalian, you definitely picked the right college!

Thanks for all your interests, your JCR.
